Na een jaar van gesloten bioscopen staan toch de Oscars weer voor de deur. De genomineerden voor de felbegeerde filmbeeldjes zijn vandaag bekendgemaakt en het is diverser dan ooit tevoren. Onder meer twee vrouwen zijn genomineerd voor beste regisseur en negen van de twintig genomineerde acteurs/actrices zijn van een etnische minderheid. 

De grootste kanshebber met tien nominaties is Mank, een biografische film over scenarioschrijver en producent Herman J. Mankiewicz, die vooral bekend is van zijn werk aan de filmklassieker Citizen Kane. Mank scoort nominaties in onder meer de categorieën 'beste film', 'beste regisseur', 'beste cinematografie', 'beste mannelijke hoofdrolspeler' (Gary Oldman) en 'beste vrouwelijke bijrol' (Amanda Seyfried). 

Na koploper Mank volgen liefst zes films die ieder zes nominaties binnensleepten. Het gaat om het drama The father, biopic Judas and the black messiah, dramafilm Minari, dramafilm Nomadland, muziekdrama Sound of metal en historisch drama The trial of the Chicago 7. Veel drama dus.
